Learning Council Calendar of Events 2009/2010

We are pleased to announce the upcoming calendar of Learning Council events, featuring many BAI members. More details will come on each event as we get closer to the date. Also, several other events are still in the planning stages, so watch the listserv for updates.

2009/2010 BAI Learning Council Calendar of Events

Sat. Oct. 24th 9-10 am: Environmental Action committee: What Parashat Noach can teach us about the environmental crises of today: A participatory theatre program

Sun. Oct. 25th 10 am - 11:30: Special event for Parents of Children with Differences

Linda Heller will speak on “Building Inclusive Community and a Support Network for the Parents of Children with Differences” and Rachel Sobel will speak on "The college search and application process for students with LD, ADHD and Asperger's."

Sat. Nov. 14th 9 am – 10 am: Rabbi Judd Levingston of Barrack Hebrew Academy will discuss his new book "Teaching Johnny, Yossi and Muhammad to be good: Is Moral Education always the same from one school to another?"

Sat. Dec. 12th 9 am – 10 am: Nick Fiekowsky will speak on his experience as a voluntary member of a major airline's disaster response. Nick will discuss how his work embodied many Torah teachings.

Sat. Jan. 30th 9 am – 10 am: Ilene Wasserman will speak on “Key lessons from Buber and Mussar to guide our own reflection on ways in which we can better be dialogic with each other in our families and our community. “

Sat. March 13th 9 am – 10 am: Arnold Feldman will speak on "Integration of the psychodynamic theory of the mind with Jewish spiritual (mystical) beliefs and practices, and how this integration can make therapy more effective."

Sun. March 14th 10-11 am: Joe Finkelstein will speak about his recent trip to Austria to visit his grandfather's grave. Joe will show a video that will include the graveside memorial service with Chief Rabbi Chaim Eisenberg of Austria, the Wels annual ceremony in memory of the 1035 victims who died after liberation, and Joe’s family’s visit to Mauthausen.

Sat. March 27th 9 am – 10 am: The BAI Book Club will lead a discussion of "All Other Nights" by Dara Horn, the book chosen this year as part of the "One Book, One Jewish Community" program. Books will be available for sale in the synagogue office several weeks prior to the event.
