Shalom From Tel Aviv
I spent the past Shabbat and few days in Tel Aviv. A few highlights of the past few days:
-Kabbalat Shabbat with singing and dancing at a pluralistic synagogue called Beit Tefila Yisraeli. (This was by far the most inspirational and introspective service I've been to in a very long time.)
-Watching the sunset and making Havdalah on the beach with Israelis from all over the globe!
-Walking just about everywhere and learning about Zionist leaders, Hebrew writers and other leaders in Jewish history. (I think just about every street in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv is named for a person. Many I know, many sound familiar, and I have some names to look up when I get back.)
-The Haganah museum, the Rubin museum and the Rabin museum have been my favorites, and tomorrow before I head back I am hoping to visit the Palmach museum and take an architectural tour to learn about the bauhaus style.
-Lunch with Nirit Reichman (4th graders and her adult Hebrew students, she said to be sure to send you her love!) She brought Eli, her newborn along, and he's adorable!
As an ice cream and frozen yogurt lover, I need to share one more highlight: my hotel serves frozen yogurt for breakfast. Yes, there is a self serve machine and toppings bar. (Top That!)
The leadership institute's Israel seminar and my travels have been eye opening. I've seen Israel in ways I never imagined and am returning with a much deeper and richer understanding of Israel's complexities....and many more questions than answers!
Shavua tov! I look forward to being back at BAI towards the end of the week and hoping that our students will be able as excited to help me unpack as they were to help me pack.
P.S. This article about Israel education appeared last week in Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper. The author, Alex Sinclair, presented to our group and I found his ideas thought provoking, especially since I am not sure I fully agree with all that he says.
