Capitol Steps

 Raise a glass, raise funds, and laugh out loud with your Beth Am Israel friends, as together we sponsor the famous Capitol Steps.  For over thirty-five years, the Capitol Steps has been entertaining audiences – on all sides of the political spectrum  – with their musical parodies and satires which are “fresh, crispy and right from the headlines.”

Born in 1981, The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. They dug into the headlines of the day and crafted musical skits to convey their special brand of satirical humor. Fast forward thirty-five years and while not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, collectively, the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

No matter who holds office, there’s never a shortage of material.  According to co-founder, Elaina Newport, “Typically the Republicans goof up, and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That’s what we call the two-party system.”

Since they began, The Capitol Steps have recorded over 35 albums, including their latest two:  Make America Grin Again and What to Expect When You’re Electing.  They will be performing hits from both at Congregation Beth Am Israel on May 4, 2019. The Steps perform all over the country and  been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

Tickets range in price from $3600 to $72 – all which come with immense BAI gratitude.

  • $3600 – includes HUGE thanks, 6 tickets at a “show” table with wine & nibbles, 6 raffle tickets, CDs and post-show meet and greet with the cast.
  • $1800 – includes 6 tickets in front fixed seating, 6 raffle tickets, CDs and post-show meet and greet with the cast.
  • $720 – includes 4 tickets, 4 raffle tickets, and CDs.
  • $360 – includes 2 tickets, 1 raffle ticket and CD.
  • $72 – includes 1 ticket

Sponsors will have a select raffle drawing, allowing the odds to be greater for a winner.  Winner of the sponsor drawing will receive two orchestra seats to see Hamilton in New York City on November 2, 2019 at 8pm.   The winner of the sponsor drawing will also receive a night’s stay at the Kimpton Muse Hotel and a $100 gift certificate for brunch Sunday morning at a place of his or her own choosing.

Additional raffles for all ticket holders and all raffle purchases include, but is not limited to:

  • Family Special:   6 seats to see To Kill a Mockingbird in New York on Sunday, November 3rd at 3pm.
  • Friends in NYC:  4 seats to see To Kill a Mockingbird in New York on Sunday, November 3rd at 3pm.
  • The Arts in Philly:  2 seats for for three shows at  the Arden Theater (Saturday nights); winner selects the shows and dates.

Raffle tickets are included with all sponsorships and ticket purchases at the $720 and above level.

Additional raffle tickets may be purchased for $20 for one or six for $60.

  • 10 Tickets (Reserved Table, set with wine and nibbles)

  • Up to 10 CDs

$5,000:   Envoy

  • 8 Tickets (Reserved Table, set with wine and nibbles)
  • 8 Raffle Tickets (to see Hamilton or To Kill a Mockingbird in New York City; winner gets to select on the spot!)
  • Up to 8 CDs

To compliment and encourage the spirit of giving, we are offering a “dinner-show feel”.  The Capitol Steps will perform in our sanctuary space, where we will have tables upfront and of course our regular fixed seating.  Some sponsorship and ticket levels offer donors reserved table seating.  Most seating will be unreserved and will follow the standard Beth Am principle of  “first come, first served.”    Please enjoy! The minimum cost to run this amazing event is $72 per ticket.   Please work with your financial service advisor based on your situation and your donation amount to determine how much is deductible for you.   Thank you for your donation.

We are, and will always be, Beth Am Israel.  There is always room for one more and always at a level that supports each of us. Please let Grace know if you can not meet the fundraising minimum of $72 a ticket and we will most certainly make accomodations.
