Social Justice

On May 20, 2020, the Congregation Beth Am Israel's Board of Directors unanimously approved a proposal coming from an ad hoc committee wanting to officially increase our involvement in social justice.

This proposal and now approved motion encourages congregants to engage in activities sponsored by these four organizations that will include letter writing, rallies (virtual and physical), and bringing in speakers to build awareness, and for at least one member of the Committee to be in regular contact with the organization and with BAI members.  As this will is now sanctioned by and approved by the BAI Board, messages about activities and opportunities can be announced on our communication system.

The four agencies are:

  1.  Jewish Earth Alliance (JEA) (Environmental Justice)
  2.  CeaseFirePA – Taking a Stand Against Gun Violence (Sensible gun control and gun violence prevention)

3.  Fair Districts PA (FDPA) (Fair districts to protect our elections)
4.  Common Cause PA (Protect citizens ability to vote in  fair elections)

This proposal followed the previously approved process to formally consider how BAI officially engages in social action and social justice.  Working with these nonpartisan organizations does not conflict with our Nonprofit charitable status.

Now we start doing the justice work and welcome all to participate with us.  Please volunteer to join our planning process and our action steps. Currently, we will be meeting and participating remotely, but we look forward to doing work together.
